How to Get Your Business Up and Running
Tuesday, April 10th, 2012Starting a business is a fairly complicated and frightening thing to do. Everyone has ideas that they think would make a great business, but few of us have the nerve to go through with it. If you’ve decided it’s time to take a chance and start your own business, you’re going to need a little help. This article should give you a nudge in the right direction.
Choose a Business
Some people have business ideas multiple times a day, others once in a great while. Either way you’ll have to weed out the good ideas from the great ideas before you choose just one. Think logically when you are cutting out the bad ones. Make sure that the product or service you are going to offer is different from others out there. Every business should have something that sets them apart from others already out there; this is because you need to give your customers a reason to choose you over others.
Make a Plan
Every great business needs a plan. It just isn’t enough to have a good idea and run with it. So once you’ve decided on your business, take the time sit down and make an organized business plan. All businesses are different, so each business plan will be unique to its own business. With that said, most business plans will include some of the same important components. Most importantly, a business plan will contain a description of the company, what good or service they offer, why that good or service is in need, and financial projections. There are plenty of examples for outlines on the internet. However, it is important to form an example plan to fit your specific needs and goals.
Location
When developing your company you have to decide on where you are going to be based. You have to think logically and strategize when choosing your location. For example, someone looking to start a jet ski business probably shouldn’t open their first store in the middle of the desert. Also, if there are similar companies in an area, check them out and see how business is going for them. If several companies seem to be struggling, you may want to choose a different location. With that said, it’s probably not the best idea in the world to set up shop next to a big company that’s been around for years.
Get Legal
Starting a business isn’t as easy as some people think it is. There are many different aspects to starting and running a successful business. One of the more important parts is making sure you take the time to legalize your business. Do your research and make sure to get the right business permits and licenses. These may vary depending on the city, county, and state you are in. Another thing you’ve got to decide on is whether you will be running a sole proprietorship, a partnership, limited liability company (LLC), or a corporation. Typically it’s better to go with either a LLC or a corporation as to avoid taking responsibility for any legal problems the company may encounter. You may also need to get business insurance. Sites like BusinessInsurance.org can help you get quotes.
Promotion
There’s nothing worse than having a grand opening that no one shows up to. To avoid this, you should do a little research and make sure you have the best marketing strategy for your product or service. For example, if your product targets boys and girls ages 15-17, a newspaper ad probably wouldn’t be the best way for you to go. In that situation you’d be better off using the internet to your advantage. Word of mouth is always a great way to promote your business as well. Don’t be afraid to tell everyone you know about it. Not just your friends and family, but your doctor, your neighbors, etc. Encourage them to spread the word as well. It’s important to be proud of your business and excited as well. If you’re excited about it other people will be too.
